JEI (Just Enough Items)

This adds a GUI to the side of your inventory screen that shows all of the possible items in the game, as well as their names and crafting recipes! Extremely helpful to those who are new to modpacks.

WAWLA (What Are We Looking At)

This tells you, well, what you're looking at! Hovering over any block shows you its name and what mod it's from. Extremely helpful for those who are new to modpacks.

Journey Map

This adds a minimap to the top right of your screen, as well as adds a full-size map that automatically charts the areas that you've been to, which you can open by pressing (J). Plus! You can press (B) to set waypoints at your location, to remember all the cool places you've been to.

Optifine

This improves your computer's performance, which can get real rough when modpacks come into play. It also gives you a ton more control over your video settings, and is required if you want to play with shaders.
