🌙 NIGHT 12 • 📅 MARPENOTH 2
To Suffer
Soren continues to patiently and gently but firmly work on Nezznar's wounds as the drider hurls insults and taunts of the past at Soren. Nezznar demands to know why Soren is being kind, and Soren repeats what he'd previously said about not wanting to see others suffer as he had.
Nezznar reminds Soren that he's danced this dance before, that he's only manipulating the party as he had so many times before, which the rest of the party hears. Will says not to put the party in his mouth.
Taking all these insults in stride, Soren asks what happened to the Xorlarrins, which Nezznar is reluctant to share. He does reveal that his Matron is likely dead, that he had begrudging respect for her, and that he had personally killed one or more of his sisters, as well as his older brother.
Eventually, Nezznar brings up Nadhiir Catanzaro, Soren's older brother. Nezznar claims that Nadhiir was sold to a master or mistress much more cruel than he, which devastates Soren. Nezznar refuses to tell Soren where Nadhiir was sold to.
Will tries to remove Soren from the stressful situation, leading Nezznar to taunt that Soren has found new masters in the party. Soren responds by asking for permission to bandage Nezznar's humanoid portion (since Nezznar could probably reach him and bite him), which Nezznar reacts violently about. Seeing how much discomfort it was causing his former master, Soren lets him be and rejoins the party.
Future Plans
The party discuss what to do next; Hugh suggests bringing Nezznar out of the cave and turning him in at Waterdeep before exploring the rest of the cave. The group consensus however, strays towards wanting to wrap up the Forge business--since we still have not technically found it.
We agree to find the Forge, report to Gundren, clear the area of any dangers, before bringing Nezznar back to the Lord's Alliance for questioning. We set up watches, and go to sleep.
Watch 1: Will
Will tries to have a decent conversation with Nezznar, who is thoroughly rude as FUCK to him. Will learns of Nezznar's killing his own family; they speak about the fall of Nezznar's house, which he's very defensive about.
When Will refuses to take Nezznar's conversational bait, Nezznar muses over whether Will is the sort of person to run away from his problems and never face them head on.
"Enjoy your rest" "Go fuck yourself"
Watch 2: Sildar
Nezznar spends Sildar's watch taunting Sildar about how Soren has done this (intimacy with humans) thing time and time again to manipulate them, and if Sildar thinks he's any different. Sildar insists that he knows Soren's past and that Soren can change.
Sildar occasionally kicks Nezznar when he dozes off.
As Soren rouses from his reverie, from the stress of the situation, he has a hallucination / nightmare of Nezznar standing over Sildar with the spider staff. He screams, "WAIT WAIT NO MASTER, PLEASE!" before realizing it wasn't real.
Nezznar takes solace in the fact that long after his death, he will continue to haunt Soren's dreams.
Watch 3: Hugh and Soren
Hugh sits in front of Nezznar and eats a ration LMAO and asks if Nezznar wants to be called Nezznar or Spiderman.
He then regales the drider about his dreams: he had dreamt of being a master tailor in Phandalin and was determined to tailor a set of pants for Nezznar's drider body (with the word JUICY on the ass). Soren loses his whole fucking mind as Hugh takes out his all-purpose tool and begins to actually fucking work on said pants.
Nezznar calls this public humiliation and launches into a spiel about how it was a similar punishment to when he dressed up Soren's first sacrifice in the colors of Corellon and paraded her around Menzoberranzan.
Hugh takes measurements for Nezznar's juicy ass drider pants and gets halfway through work before going back to sleep.
Watch 4: Soren
Soren grows serious after the rest of the party goes to bed; he retrieves a dagger and some firewine, the implications clear to Nezznar as one of his own torture methods of past. Soren begins grilling Nezznar on the following:
Are there reinforcements coming for you?
Havent called for any, but he's not sure if any other drow know about the whereabouts of the forge.
Are you still able to cast?
No straight answer, but Soren is able to infer that Nezznar can no longer cast to the degree of profiency as before.
Are you able to break free?
Not at the moment, but give it some time and eventually Nezznar would be able to break through the bonds put in place.
What happened to House Xorlarrin?
No straight answer; bad decisions were made by the wrong people, the Matron died and the house collapsed.
What happened to House Catanzaro?
Matron Amalka gained power by replacing her family with a better, new one; Nadhiir truly got sold to a family whom Nezznar considers more cruel than himself.
Did you really systematically put me through 80 years of pain and terror because you liked the pitch of my screams?
"That was part of it. As good as you are at talking, you're so much better at screaming."
Do you want to die?
Nezznar reluctantly says no, but that might change.
Did Zaara really ask for my death?
No. Nezznar seems weirdly smug about this answer.
Afraid that Nezznar will realize that he has no intention of torturing him and calling his bluff, Soren offers Nezznar the Circlet of Human Perfection, which Nezznar reluctantly takes and uses.
Soren, realizing how tired Nezznar looks, allows Nezznar one hour of sleep, at which point Nezznar sarcastically says "thank you, how generous of you, Master Sorennar", which disgusts them both. Nezznar wonders why Soren would deny himself the honor of lording over Nezznar; Soren responds that "there is no honor in what you did to me."
🌞 DAY 13 • 📅 MARPENOTH 3 • 🎂🦋
The Chasm
After waking up, the group explores the chasm nearby, finding a pair of sending stones and a javelin of lightning. The former discovery prompts Sildar to remember that he owes Jalester Silvermane of the Lord's Alliance, his boss, a report, and he makes a TERRIBLE HORRIBLE fucking report LMAOOO:
Hey, is this thing working? Uh uh we good, things under control. Haven't found forge but we looking, still have things. We gottem, literally
Jalester responds back in fury.
Tell me that was not your very long overdue report, I swear to gods, Blackstaff is going to have your head if you ever dare-
The Flameskull
The group finds a room with a creature that we identify as a flameskull in it, as well as the lumbering ogre zombies from before. Nezznar flexes on us with his arcane knowledge; Soren eagerly answers a rhetorical question from him and earns a scrap of praise which he promptly squanders by asking if the Flameskull is susceptible to fire.
Soren casts webs to immobilize the zombies. The rest of the group whales in on the flameskull, which lets loose a fireball (which only really destroys Sildar) before dying promptly.
Left alone in the backline with Nezznar, Soren gets bullied a little bit before admitting that he doesn't think Nezznar will hurt him anymore, because he fears Soren's friends, and because he knows that "even if you slaughter us all now and escape, you'll never experience a scrap of the love and kindness that I've received from my friends".
Nezznar backs off after this. The party regroups and forges onward.
